Abstract :
Depression is classified as a mood disorder. Depression affects the behaviour, thought patterns and feeling of someone who suffer it in daily activities. In some cases, people who suffer depression felt that there was no more use for life. According to Kennard (2011) Depression divided into three classifications based on severity of depression itself. There are minor, moderate and major depressions. Depression also one of the interesting topic that appear in literature work such as in novel. One of the examples is Me Before You novel by Jojo Moyes. This novel tells about William Traynor as the main character that suffers depression after get an accident on the road. This research has two research questions; there is what kind of classification of depression that suffers by the main character in the novel and how characteristics, symptoms and causes describe that by the main character. In conducting the research, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method and typically library research. The data are form of the dialogues and narrations. This thesis applies psychological approach to describe psychology condition within fictitious character. Further, this thesis proposed Kennard?s theory to get information related with classification, characteristics, and symptoms of depression. Beside the writer also use Timothy?s theory to get information related causes of depression. The result of analysis in this research, the writer found that the main character in Me Before You novel suffer major depression. It can be seen from the main character?s has two characteristics of depression, there are sadness or low mood and less motivation. Besides the main characters also suffer five symptoms of depression, there are sleep pattern disturbance, change in appetite, tiredness, difficult in concentrating, and feeling worthless. In addition, the main character also suffers psychotic features such as hopeless and suicidal thought. The research also found the cause the main character suffer depression, that is chronic pain.
