Abstract :
This research was aimed to reveal the representation of World War III issue in
the news report trending after the conflict between Iran and the US at the
beginning of 2020. This study employed Fairclough?s three-dimensional model of
critical discourse analysis. Moreover, this research used qualitative descriptive
methodology. The data were articles in the New York Times and ABC News. The
findings found that the New York Times Times represented world war III as an
America-Iran war, with Iran as the main cause. Meanwhile, ABC News
represented world war III as an exaggerated issue. Second, through the findings
of the interpretation or discursive practice, the writer found that New York Times
attempted to construct an ideology that it was not the mistake of America to start
world war III, instead America acted as the hero that stops Iran?s violence.
Meanwhile, ABC News is assumed to construct an ideology to see world war III
as an exaggerated issue and to see the war from a different perspective such as
different form fo war (cyberwar/trade war). This research is expected that the
reader will pay attention to the issue that presents in news media that is related to
social context. Besides, this study as well as the result of the study might be a
reference, an overview, and additional information for other researchers.
