Abstract :
ABSTRACT Defense Mechanism as Seen in the Main Character of Victoria Aveyard?s Red Queen Akhmad Zaki Baridwan 15111571 Literary works often reflects how human in reality cope to his problems. From psychological perspective, an author may mirrors how anxieties and defense mechanism is developed to be implemented into his works. This study aims to reveal how anxiety and its application of defense mechanism from the dialogues and narratives within Mare Barrow in the novel Red Queen. The research is done by applying Sigmund Freud?s theory regarding the nine types of defense mechanism in psychology. The analysis uses the dialogues of the characters and narrations included in the novel as its main data of study, then finding the contextual similarity to Freud?s defense mechanism in psychology. This research uses descriptive qualitative method as the study attempts to identify anxiety and describe its types of defense mechanism in accordance Freud?s theory. The data sourced from library research, such as journal, articles, and other published works. The result of the study shows that Mare Barrow, the main character in Aveyard?s Red Queen suffered from anxiety and employs all of Freud?s nine types of defense mechanism; starting from repression, denial, displacement, projection, rationalization, intellectualization, regression, reaction formation, and sublimation. In which it makes an important insight as to how a fictional character can apply real psychological concept to cope with problematic situation
