Abstract :
This research had been conducted by the name of Lacanian Psychoanalysis on Main Character in The Catcher in The Rye by J. D. Salinger with psychoanalysis approach. To obtain the necessary information needed to construct the arguments, and findings, Lacanian theory of psychoanalysis will be applied to it. Symbolic order, signifier, and signified, Metaphor, and Metonymy, and Boromean Knot of Lacanian psychoanalysis become the basic guide of this research. This research used qualitative research design to give it the structural needed to order the arguments, and findings. In addition, qualitative research design is used to gather the data that are appropriate for the nature of this research as a research about literary interpretation. This research found that the structure of the unconscious of the main character consists of two interdependent realms. They are desire, and subjectivity. In the unconscious realm of psyche in main character?s mind, the structure of signifier showed the suspended move of the signifier chain. It resulted from the suspended structure within the Metonymic structure of desire, and Metaphor structure of subjectivity. That suspension resulted in his fixation to obtain his object of desire, and the longing for union with mother which depicted in his long for intimate relation, and need for fulfilling his desire. This causes him to not trust his surroundings, and the feeling of despise towards most of the people around him. In the conscious realm, this research finds that the suspended mark in unconscious is leaked out and gives the unchanged reality which cannot be influenced for it comes from outside the unconscious, the characteristics of suspended unconscious as well. It is depicted in the novel by his decision to do something which is the opposite from what normal people would do, and the abandonment of the way to achieve his desire, and reality that he can obtain only the fragmented other. It shows in the way he chooses to not force his way up to a girl, even though he should be because it has been perceived as normality, and his ideal depiction of a girl to have a relationship with which is cannot be found.
