Abstract :
MAN 1 Bandar Lampung has conducted online learning using the particular
platform from the school, namely E-Learning Madrasah MAN 1 Bandar Lampung.
The purposes of this research are: (1) to explore English language teachers? and
English literature teachers? obstacles in teaching English using E-Learning
Madrasah Platform at MAN 1 Bandar Lampung; and (2) to investigate English
language teachers? and English literature teachers? teaching strategies to
overcome online learning obstacles.
This research was carried out through a case study. It was conducted in two
classes with two English language teachers and two English literature teachers that
taught XII MIPA 3 and X IPS 5 of MAN 1 Bandar Lampung from January to March
2021. The data were obtained from the questionnaire, interview, and observation.
The research findings show that English language teachers experienced eleven
obstacles. Those are signal interference, limited time, students? participation,
preparing the materials, developing the materials, explaining the materials,
conducting video conferences, building interaction, designing lesson plans,
instructing the students, and assessing students? assignments. Then, English
literature teachers experienced ten obstacles. Those are signal interference, limited
time, students? participation, preparing the materials, developing the materials,
explaining the materials, conducting video conferences, building interaction,
giving assignments, and giving feedback to the students. Other findings also show
that English language teachers applied eleven strategies to overcome the obstacles.
Those are giving more extended time, applying an asynchronous strategy, attending
WhatsApp group, designing lesson plans properly, preparing oral and written
materials, developing the materials under 10 MB capacity, explaining the materials
on video conferences, conducting Zoom Applications, motivating the students,
instructing clearly, assessing properly. Besides, English literature teachers applied
ten strategies to overcome the obstacles. Those are giving more extended time,
applying an asynchronous strategy, attending WhatsApp group, preparing oral and
written materials, developing the materials under 10 MB capacity, explaining the
materials on video conferences, conducting Zoom Applications, motivating the
students, using WhatsApp group also to accept students? work, and giving oral and
written feedback to the students? assignments. Thus, this research can give the
English teachers information in overcoming the obstacles that become the issues in
online teaching English.
