Abstract :
Social Stratification as Portrayed in The Diamond Necklace ?La Parure? by Guy de Maupassant Uning Nurmalasari 15111002 The study is about social stratification. The aims of this study are to explain the portrayal of social stratification trough the characters of The Diamond Necklace ?La Parure? short story written by Guy de Maupassant. This study applies sociological approach by Alex Thio, in which there are three bases of stratification, they are Wealth, Power, and Prestige. Further, the writer used two types of data sources, namely primary and secondary data source. The primary data source is the short story and the secondary data source are another material related to the study. Then, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method and library research, and the data are in the form of dialogues and narrations. In conclusion, the result of the study shows the social stratification between the poor and the rich people based on three bases of stratification. Three bases of stratification have correlation each other and they are used to describe each character?s social stratification in the story.
