Abstract :
Depression is a mental disorder that disrupts people?s thoughts and behaviors. Today, depression is recognized as one of the most common mental illnesses worldwide that need to be studied and investigated in some disciplines and through literature in particular. Anyone may develop depression regardless of age or social background, yet, women are most likely prone to depression. cognitive depression is not only reflected in literary works such as in the novel it's kind of a funny story. However, this problem has become a problem faced by many teenagers today. In this study, the author uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe cognitive depression in the novel and is supported by novel data as the main source. The data are in the form of narration and dialogue in the novel It's Kind of a Funny Story. This thesis uses a psychological approach to describe the depiction of psychological problems in the novel It's Kind of a Funny Story. This thesis uses Arron Beck's theory of cognition. In depression cognition, there are three descriptions that classify a person suffering from depression, namely: Cognitive triad, Negative self Schema, and errors in logic. This paper shows that the main character in the novel It's Kind of a Funny Story written by Ned Vizzini suffers from depression, namely cognitive depression. You can see the symptoms of depression experienced by the main character, through his daily life, with the characteristics of always looking at himself from a negative view, looking at the world and its future in a negative view, and always being pessimistic.
