Abstract :
Formulaic Analysis of Science Fiction Genre in Andy Weir?s The Martian Fajar Dani Julian Tama 18111026 This study aims to analyze the formula of science fiction genre in The Martian novel. This novel applies scientific exploration on Mars focusing on Mark Watney's character. The story is about a surviving mission on Mars as Mark Watney struggles to find a way to survive by doing research and planting something on Earth. In the process, Mark with his botanist background successfully grows some potatoes and finally finds a way to communicate with his team and NASA. This study was conducted by a qualitative descriptive method. The main data source was from The Martian. The data were narration and dialogue in the novel. This study was under discussion on popular literature focusing on genre studies of science fiction. The study applied formulaic analysis theory by John Cawelti using convention and invention to find out the characteristics of the science fiction genre in the novel. The finding revealed that formulaic analysis is articulated into the conventions and invention of science fiction in the Martian. The conventions are the hero?s journey as scientist, the setting is in outer space, the robot technology or machine accompanies the hero, the newest technology is applied, and the spacecrafts that are not yet recognized in this era. While the inventions are the developments or new conventions in the story, there are; scientific exploration as an individual project, botanical research is the newest one for exploration, and the humanism issue has also been a focus.
