Abstract :
In modern times where all aspects of human life advanced rapidly, literary works are also unable to avoid the advancement in the forms of its object. Where in the past only poems and novels were considered objects of literature, now objects of literature also include drama and film. The object of literary studies in film itself has also become more varied like the animated TV series. Animated TV series are objects of literary study that exist due to the advancement of technology that made it possible to broadcast animated series using streaming sites on the internet. This study aims to explain the characterization of the main character in the animated TV series Arcane named Powder or Jinx. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyse the words, sentences, and scenes of the main character in the animated TV series Arcane. This study uses the theory of personality structure and defense mechanisms of the ego in Sigmund Freud?s psychoanalysis approach. This study found 24 out of 61 data that can be used to represent the personality structure portrayal of trauma and defense mechanisms of the ego used by the character Powder or Jinx in the animated TV series Arcane. Based on the data found in the study it can be concluded that the character Powder or Jinx has a weak ego and is over-reliant on using the defense mechanism of the ego particularly when faced with a choice between following the need of the id or the standard set by the superego and if faced with the trauma she experienced. The results of this study are expected to become new information and knowledge on the use of old theories to new objects of literary studies such as animated TV series.
