Abstract :
Semiotics involves the study of the formation and use of signs. This study, titled "A Semiotic Analysis on Icon, Index, and Symbol in Paulo Coelho's Novel Hippie" focuses on the semiotic elements in the 2018 novel by Paulo Coelho. Utilizing Charles Sander Pierce's semiotic theory, which categorizes signs into trichotomy, which is called representamen, object, and interpretant, this study aims to uncover the meanings and the semiotic elements-specifically icons, indices, and symbols-within the novel. Employing a descriptive-qualitative methodology, the study identifies sixteen signs comprised of six icons, four indices, and six symbols. The analysis reveals the spiritual journey of Paulo Coelho, as demonstrated through various dimensions of religiosity. These dimensions include one experimental, five ritualistic, two ideological, five intellectual, and three consequential aspects. Icons are predominantly associated with monuments and objects related to Islam and Sufism, indices are linked to Paulo's learning process about Sufism, and symbols are mainly observed in Sufi worship practices.
