Abstract :
This study was aimed to find out whether pictures as a teaching media significantly affected the eighth graders? competences in Degrees of Comparison at SMPN 184 Jakarta. This research was a quantitative study which employed experimental method. The population in this research was all the eighth graders at SMPN 184 Jakarta. The two samples were taken from the VIII-9 and VIII-6 using purposive sampling technique. The researcher used descriptive statistic analysis technique and parametric statistic analysis technique to analyse the data collected using a pre-test and post-test instrument. The normality test using Lilliefors or Kolmogorov-Smirov technique, indicating the data of two samples were normal. In the homogeneity test result using Levene?s test also indicated that the data were homogeneous. The research hypotheses test indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a significant effect of pictures as teaching medium on the eighth graders? competence achievement in degrees of comparison at SMPN 184 Jakarta. It is recommended that the teachers and students as the candidate teachers studying in the English Teaching Study Program in this faculty use pictures in teaching grammar, especially to the eighth graders of SMP. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif yang menggunakan metode eksperimen. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas delapan di SMPN 184 Jakarta. Dua sampel diambil dari VIII-9 dan VIII-6 yang menggunakan teknik purposive sampling.Peneliti menggunakan teknik analisis statistik deskriptif dan teknik analisis statistik parametrik untuk menganalisa data yang telah dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan instrumen pre-test dan post-test. Uji normalitas pada penelitian ini menggunakan Lilliefors atau KolmogorovSmirov teknik dan menunjukan bahwa data kedua sampel normal. Pada uji homogenitas menggunakan uji Levene dan menunjukan bahwa data kedua sampel adalah homogeny. Uji hipotesis penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada pengaruh yang signifikan dari gambar sebagai media pengajaran pada pencapaian kompetensi siswa kelas delapan dalam pengajaran Degrees of Comparison di SMPN 184 Jakarta. Penelitian ini menyarankan supaya guru dan siswa sebagai calon guru yang sedang belajar di Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di fakultas ini untuk menggunakan gambar dalam pengajaran tata bahasa, terutama untuk siswa kelas delapan SMP.
