Abstract :
Reading is an essential tool if one is to continuously obtain knowledge
throughout his or her lifespan. The ultimate goal for middle school teachers is to
motivate adolescents to read more in school as well as on their own for enjoyment to
become mature readers. However, adolescents today are not actively engaged in daily
reading by taking advantage of the books at their disposal.
Population is the universal set of all objects under study. The population of
this research is the students in the first grade of SMA BUDI MULIA Jakarta. Sample
is any subset of the population. In this research the sample wastaken from students in
the first grade that consisted of 7 classes. The total amount of sample was 89
students. From 89 students, 20 students were defined as a sample and 69 students as
the study sample. The sampling used proportional sampling techniques
(ProportionateStratified Random Sampling).
This study usedsurveymethod and correlationalbecause theresearchsought to
investigatethe relationshipbetweenseveralindependent variables, namely the
independent variables and dependent variable. The independent variable X as the
students? reading interest and the dependent variable Y is the student?s English
learning achievement. The survey results reveal that there is a significant relationship between the
students? reading interest andEnglish learning achievement in reading comprehension
skill at SMA Budi Mulia Jakarta. This was indicated by the correlation coefficient of
0.741 which shows a strong correlation of these two variables and the coefficient of
determination of 0.548 which shows a variable student's reading interest (X) only
affects reading comprehension skills (Y) of 54.8%, while 45.2% influenced by other
factors. Thus, by increasing the student's reading interest, their reading
comprehension skill will be increased.
