Abstract :
The purpose of this research was to find out how Greta's speech gained
international recognition, where she spoke about the severity of the climate crisis.
by analyzing Greta Thunberg?s speech at the UN Climate Action Summit in New
York in September 2019,to find the kinds of locutionary and illocutionary act and
the classification mostly used by Greta Thunberg,. This research used a descriptive
qualitative method. This research used Austin's theory for speech act and Yule?s
theory to categorize illocutionary act. The findings of this research showed that
Greta Thunberg performed one locutionary act to report and performed four of five
classifications of illocutionary act. They were representative, expressive, directive,
and commissive. Greta Thunberg performed representative acts such as stating.
She performed expressive acts such as anger and thanking. She once did directive
act such as a warning. She also performed commissive act such as refusing and
promising while she did not do any declaration acts in her speech. Greta Thunberg
dominated her speech with a representative act that occurred 13 times (54,16%).
Expressive was in the second position occurring 7 (29,16). Commissive was in the
third position occurring 2 (8,33). Directive occurs 1 (4,16%), the last was
locutionary act occurs 1 (4,16%). The researcher discovered that her speech
encouraged millions of people to participate in global climate action that month.
