Abstract :
This thesis is about one of Agatha Christie’s detective fictions, which focuses on the social condition of England after the World War I. Many people become frustrated after knowing that there are not many jobs available for them. That condition influences their marriage life. One of them is the major character of One, Two, Buckle My Shoe, Alistair Blunt. He was one of the suspected murderers of dr. Morley, Amberiotis, and Sainsburry Sealle. Agatha Christie is regarded as the queen of detective fiction. She deliberately made readers unaware of who is the real murderer, with her special “locked – room†formula. It is usually until the end of the story that readers are shown who the real murderer is. Through a library research and socio – historical analysis, the thesis writer is able to find out at least two reasons for why such a detective fiction by Christie is read by many people of her time. One is because people distrusted the police to handle crimes such as the murder discussed in the novel. Another reason is because the government could no longer be trusted in taking care of the society’s concern. It is for this reason that a detective like Poirot, became the savior of the early 19th English society.
