Abstract :
ST 37 steel is classified as low carbon steel, which has a carbon content of less than 0.3%, according to specifications of 0.16%. This steel is often used also for machine constructions that rub against each other such as gears, shafts, etc. because it is very ductile. The disadvantage of these steels is that the surface hardness is relatively low. In order to be used for the constructions mentioned above, it needs to be modified to improve the hardness value, especially on the surface. Hardening of ST 37 steel is a process that is carried out to improve the mechanical properties of the strength of the material it has. With good strength can withstand the compressive load received by the material. The hardening process that is carried out to improve the mechanical properties of the ST 37 material is the Quenching method using SAE 20 oil where the ST 37 material is heated from a temperature of 790 ?C, 830 OC, and 870 OC with a time of 60 minutes. The hardening process was carried out with each experiment using 3 workpieces The results obtained from the ST 37 workpiece hardening, resulted in several parameters increasing the tensile value that occurred from the heated test object and quenching SAE 20 oil on the 790?C heating test object of 544.1 MPa, while the 830?C heating test object was 493.7 MPa and on the object of the 870?C heating test results of 496.3. The results of the heating test experienced a decrease in tensile strength. Key words : ST 37 Steel, Hardening, Tensile Test.
