Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to describe the factors that hinder students speaking performance. The subject of this study was the third semester students at a private university in Central Java in the academic year of 2016/2017. There were 60 respondents who joined this study. The research design was a descriptive study. The quantitative data came from the Likert Scale on questionnaire and also supported by the reason on it. The instrument of the study was a questionnaire. The data were tabulated by descriptive analysis on SPSS program version 23. The research findings were most of the respondents disagreed to the statements on the questionnaire about the factors hindering students? speaking performance. It showed on the descriptive statistic from questionnaire statement 1 to 15. Most of the respondents chose Likert Scale 2 which means they disagreed to the statement. There were also some respondents selected ?agree? to the statement. Based on this study, it can be concluded that there were five factors that hinder the students? speaking performance; psychological factor, linguistic factor, affective factor, socio-cultural factor, and pedagogical factor.
