ABSTRACT Ingerti, Utami Putri (2020). Students? Strategies in Expressing Condolence: A Study at English Study Program of Jambi University. Thesis, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University in Academic Year 2020. First supervisor: Drs. Adrefiza, M.A., Ph.D and second supervisor: Dedy Kurniawan, S.S,M.A. The research entitled ?Students? Strategies in Expressing Condolence: A Study at English Study Program of Jambi University? was aimed at investigating the speech act of condolence in English and showing the way EFL learners express their condolences in situations with different degrees of social factor. This research was conducted in Jambi University. The researcher used the qualitative descriptive method. The data were analyzed using the theory of Elwood (2004) for strategies in condolence utterances. Based on the condolence expression used by the participants, it found twelve strategies of condolence namely 1) Expression of sympathy, 2) Acknowledgment of death, 3) Offer of assistance, 4) Future-oriented remarks, 5) Expression of concern, 6) Recitation of Quranic verses, 7) Pity, 8) Silence, 9) Pray, 10) Statement of lacking word, 11) Philosophical statement, and 12) Do action/looking for help. It was also found that gender did not too affect the choice of condolence strategies. Some implications of the study were also discussed. Keywords: Speech Act, Condolence Strategies.
