Abstract :
This thesis discussed the politeness strategies in the Aladdin movie. This movie told the story of a commoner named Aladdin who falls in love with a princess named Jasmine. The purposes of this study were: (1) to find out the types of politeness strategies used by the two main characters in Aladdin movie, (2) to find out the factors affecting the two main characters in using politeness strategies. This thesis used the pragmatic approach theory from Leech (1993), and politeness theory from Brown and Levinson (1987). This study used qualitative research methods and descriptive methods to analyze the data. The researcher used documentation to collect the data and the Aladdin movie script is the main data source in this study. The two main characters used politeness strategies in their conversations to create close relationships and to make up the misunderstandings between the two of them. In this study, the researcher found four types of politeness strategies used by the two main characters, namely bald-on record (4 times), positive politeness (6 times), negative politeness (5 times), and off-record strategy (5 times). Also, the factors that influence the use of politeness strategies are based on sociological factors which include the social distance factor (2 data), the power factor (2 data), and the absolute ranking of imposition factor (1 data).
