Ahmad Ridha, M.A. Politeness strategies can be observed in day-to-day interactions and broadcast media, such as The Crown TV Series. This research aimed to describe politeness strategies expressed by characters in the series. The researcher made use of the qualitative method, with one episode of the series and its transcript serving as data sources. To collect the data, the researcher utilised datasheets to make them structured and simplify the analysis process using the politeness theory from Brown and Levinson (2011). The findings demonstrated that the characters in The Crown TV Series conveyed all types of politeness strategies. The bald on-record strategy was expressed in eight different forms: direct statement, direct question, request, command, disagreement, welcoming expression, task-oriented statement, and the provision of advice. The positive politeness strategy was employed in the form of common ground, promise, praise, agreement-seeking, thanking, greeting, agreement, joke, exaggerated statement, offer, and solidarity. The characters in the series conveyed the negative politeness strategy in the form of deference, question; hedge, indirect request, and apology. The off-record strategy was also expressed in five forms: rhetorical question, clue, implicative statement, contradictory statement, and presupposition. Distance, power, and the ranking of impositions influenced politeness strategies in the series, which was dominated by the power distinctions and the influence of the hierarchical levels, making communication in British Royal settings direct.
