Abstract :
This research aimed to describe students? perception of pronunciation element problems in speaking English and their strategies to deal with them. In conducting this research, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative design with six participants who participated in this research who were chosen randomly and met specific criteria by the researcher. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. This research identified several problems in English pronunciation faced by the participants, namely difficulties in articulating certain consonants and vowels and distinguishing similar words. The pronunciation of diphthongs, or phrases that are not pronounced as they are spelt, resulted in varying experiences among the participants. Students demonstrated different levels of comprehension and application of syllable stress, with some beginning to pay attention to it. Intonation appears as a common obstacle that often causes misunderstandings in communication. Students implemented various strategies to overcome these pronunciation problems, including self-assessment and practicing pronunciation using multiple media sources such as the Duolingo app, YouTube, music, English-language articles, and dictionaries.
