Request is the type of speech act where the speaker tends to make the hearer to do something. This research aimed to find out; (1) what request strategies are used by the English students and (2) what modification devices are used by them in making the request. Ten students in fifth semester were chosen based on who have past linguistic subject. Descriptive qualitative was chosen as research design and the data were collected from open role-play situation given to the participants. The result showed that the participant frequently used conventional indirect request and they mostly used external request modification rather that internal modifications. On the order hand, the participant lack of pragmatic competence and they sometime did not use the right grammar in making the request. Therefore, the students need know more about pragmatic and cultural from their target language in order to minimize misunderstanding, and for the lecturer need to teach them more about pragmatic, grammar and the culture on the target language.
