Abstract :
This term-paper discusses about the theme of a novel. Two approaches, intrinsic and extrinsic approaches, are applied to analyze this novel. The concept that is applied to analyze through intrinsic approach consists of characterization by using showing and telling methods, plot and setting. The concept to analyze through extrinsic approach is defense mechanism. The concept is projection by Baumeister. This research explains about the projection of Baumeister concept of defense mechanism in one character, Lena Abbott , as well as its relation to other intrinsic elements. In this research, Into The Water novel is the primary sources and supported by some of relevant theories, concepts, and definitions which as secondary sources.
