Abstract :
Patriarchal society is a male-dominated system in which males are privileged in
more than one way while females are often oppressed. The novel Circe by Madeline
Miller is a modern retake from a piece of Greek mythology, it takes place in Ancient
Greece which notes how far patriarchal system has dated back to. Circe reflects a
lot on how females live and are expected to behave in a patriarchal society. Females
are not represented enough in media, and Circe is one of the few representations of
a strong female character and she brings light into what it takes to survive in a sexist
society as a female. Through Roland Barthes?s semiotic approach, the novel will be
analysed to unveil myths about patriarchal society and females living in it. Certain
signs within the novel have been chosen according to the theme. The meanings of
the signs are interpreted through descriptive approach by the writer, and the myths
in the signs are explained after that. This novel proves to reflect a lot on how
patriarchal society goes against females in more than one way.
