Abstract :
This term paper discussed about the annotation of See You in the Cosmos novel by Jack Cheng using translation theories and techniques from Peter Newmark and Benny Hoed. More specifically, the study discusses about the translation of the words, phrases, and idioms found in Jack Cheng?s See You in the Cosmos Novel. Translation is the process of translating words or text from one language into another. An annotated translation is a translation which is supported by annotations or notes or explanations in order to deliver logical reasons for the equivalence chosen. Due to the different cultures between source language and target language, those words, phrases, and idioms cannot be translated explicitly. Therefore, methods and techniques of translation such as contextual conditioning, idiomatic translation and descriptive are used in conducting this annotated translation. Furthermore, this study is a qualitative range of research; this method is applied in order to know the kinds of methods used by the writer in translating the novel and to know the translation equivalence between source language and target language existed. The writer finds 38 words and phrases that have potential to be annotated, and most of them are using descriptive, contextual conditioning and idiomatical translation to get the equivalent meaning to the target language.
