Abstract :
This research is aimed to find out what maxims are flouted and hedged , and to observe
how they are flouted and hedged in certain conversation. The writer elaborates the theory of
Cooperative Principle by H.P Grice, the various ways of flouting maxim by Grundy and
Cutting, and the theory of hedging maxims by George Yule with cases which are taken out
from the script of Disney?s animated movie entitled Ralph Breaks the Internet which first
premiered in 2018. The writer begins conducting the research by identifying the flouting and
hedging maxims employed by the characters in the movie. After that, the writer observes how
the characters in the movie flouting and hedging the maxims through their utterances in the
movie. Finally, the writer classifies the flouting and hedging maxims done by the characters in
the movie according to the theories employed in Chapter 2. For this research, the writer uses
qualitative approach with descriptive method. The results of the analysis are: 24 cases of
flouting maxim and 16 cases of hedging maxim. At the end, the writer finds flouting and
hedging maxims are quite essential in a conversation. Flouting maxims make conversations
less stiff and hedging maxims lessen the impact of an utterance in a conversation.
