Abstract :
This research aims to analyze several utterances in a movie script using a theory by Brown and
Levinson. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach. The data were utterances employed
by the characters in Spider-Man: No Way Home movie script. The data were analyzed with the use
of Creswell?s (2013) five steps. The research object in this research is Spider-Man: No Way Home
(2021) movie script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. There are 21 data found in this
research. Based on them, there are 11 positive politeness strategies classified. And the most
frequently appeared strategy is strategy of avoiding disagreement. From this research, it can be
concluded that positive politeness strategies can be used for make a conversation with strangers
and minimize the damage of self-image between the speaker and the interlocutors by fulfilling the
interlocutor?s desire to be respected. Peter uses positive politeness strategies more often than the
other characters to have a cooperation. The intimacy and the difference of professional background
between the speaker and the interlocutors are limit the use of positive politeness strategies in their
utterances.
