Abstract :
This study aims to analyse several utterances in a movie script using several theories in pragmatics.
The theories in pragmatics used to analyse the utterances are speech acts, and illocutionary acts.
This research uses qualitative approach and is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method.
The research object in this study is Hellboy (2019) movie script by Andrew Cosby. The research
data are collected from several utterances which are conveyed by several characters in Hellboy
(2019) movie script. The results of this research are the types of illocutionary acts found in the
utterances in Hellboy movie script which are Representative, directive, commissive, declarative, and
expressive using Searle theories first I classify the utterance into five types of illocutionary acts.
Then, I analyse the intent and context behind the utterances. Therefore, after carefully analysing all
the utterances I can conclude that, the most dominant types of illocutionary acts found in Hellboy
(2019) movie script is representative acts with thirty data found in object of the research, directive
with nineteen data found in the movie script, commisive with four data found in the movie script,
declarative with one data found in the movie script, and expressive with one data found in the movie
script
