Abstract :
This study aims to analyse deixis and to understand the meaning of the reference words that are shown from the utterances by several characters in ?Knives Out? (2019) movie script by Rian Johnson. The theories in pragmatics used to analyse the utterances is deixis, and references. This research uses qualitative approach. It is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The research object in this study is Knives Out (2019) movie script by Rian Johnson. The research data are collected from several utterances which are conveyed by several characters in Knives Out (2019) movie script. This study aims to analyse several utterances in a movie script using several theories in pragmatics. The results of this research reveals there are five types of deixis in Knives Out movie script such as person, place, time, social, and discourse deixis using Levinson?s theories. This study also reveals there are total 89 data of deixis found in Knives Out movie script. Moreover, the most dominant types of deixis found in ?Knives Out? (2019) is person deixis movie script with 57 data found in object of the research. Therefore, all these deictic words are also describing the reference words, which means that the meaning of the words to convey the characters exact meaning is known by looking at the previous context, phrases, and sentences.
