Abstract :
This study aims to analyze violating and flouting maxims that contains in ?Little Women? movie script, this study also analyze the implied meaning of the character?s utterances when they flout maxims. The research approach for this study was qualitative approach and for the method, this study used descriptive qualitative methods because this study is analyzing phenomenon from the characters and this study is non-numerical data, the data that is being analyzed is from movie script. The object of this study is movie script from Little Women being analyzed by taking notes and sorting the data based on the violating or flouting maxims. The result of this study, there are 37 data include all of violating and flouting maxim. I divided into 2 types of failures of maxim, the first one is violating maxim. I found 22 data that contains violating maxim. 3 violating maxim of quantity, 3 violating maxim of quality, 13 violating maxim of relevance and 3 violating maxim of manner. For the second failures of maxim is flouting maxim, I found 15 data that contains flouting maxim. 4 flouting maxim of quantity, 4 flouting maxim of quality, 6 flouting maxim of relevance and 1 flouting maxim of manner. In conclusion, some characters in "Little Women" movie script utter sentences or phrases that intentionally violates or flouts the maxims, some characters also express the implied meaning of what they say in their utterances.
