Abstract :
This term paper explains the theme of literature by using a novel with intrinsic and extrinsic approach. The intrinsic approach consists of characterization, setting, plot: and the extrinsic approach uses the death instinct concept. The research is qualitative research, the kind of library research, interpretive analysis by the method of data collection in the form of literary text of the novel whose title is First to Die by James Patterson as the primary source. It is also supported by some literature related to the relevant theory, concept, and definition as the secondary sources.
