Abstract :
The personality of each human being is certainly not the same. Also, when faced with problems,
their control and defence mechanisms are different. Using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches, this
research aims to study the defence mechanisms used by individuals when they face problems, both
from within and outside. The intrinsic approach is used to analyse data such as: Characterisation,
plot, and settings. While the extrinsic approach focuses on the application of defence mechanisms
by individuals when facing problems in the form of conflict, anxiety, or trauma. This research uses
qualitative methods with the type of library research and uses data collection methods from the
movie script entitled Sicario: Day of the Soldado by Taylor Sheridan as the main source. This
research is also supported by various books, journals, and previous related study as secondary
sources. The result of this research is the discovery of various forms of defence employed by Matt
Gravers and Alejandro Gillick as the two main characters in this movie script. Matt and Alejandro
are members of a special forces team tasked with carrying out classified operations. In carrying out
their duties, they are often faced with various challenges that interfere with their feelings, thoughts,
and moral judgements. Because of this, they must use defence mechanisms to protect themselves
and stay afloat and maintain their focus in order to complete operations. In this study, it can be
concluded that both characters use five forms of defence mechanisms to survive, namely aggression,
projection, sublimation, rationalisation, and denial.
