Abstract :
This paper will analyzes the memoar using intrinsic and extrinsic approach. Through the intrinsic approach is the concept characterization, setting, and plot. Meanwhile through the extrinsic approach consist of depression and death instinct theory by Sigmund Freud and analyzed through character Arnold. It was conducted that the main character having depression which led him into having death insticnt. The approach of the research used qualitative. The research approach method was through the process of knowledge understanding, discovering and reading the literary psichology concepts and methods that applies. The research object and data is the memoir Mind on Fire: A Memoir of Madness and Discovery. Data collection technique by reading and understanding the dialogue of the memoir. Data analysis I use by finding fragments of dialogue that show the psychological conditions that applies. This paper aims to reveal that early childhood traumatic events and the lack of emotional support by caregiver tend leads someone to a depressive state that could result in one to have a death wish upon himself. I use depression and death instinc by Sigmund Freud theories to analyze this research.
