Abstract :
This study aims to analyze utterances in a movie script using pragmatics approach. The theories in pragmatics used to analyze the utterances are context, deixis, and references. This research use qualitative approach. It was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method because the result of analyzing the data is ?what? question concerning specific occurrences is answered. The research object in this study is John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) movie script by Shay Hatten. The research data are collected from utterances which are conveyed by several characters in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) movie script. The result of this research is the types of deixis that are found in the utterances in ?John Wick: Chapter 4? movie script are person, time, place, discourse, and social. Then, the deictic words or phrase found in the utterances in John Wick movie script are ?I?, ?you?, ?he?, ?here?, ?now?, ?not today?, ?your daughter?, ?that?, ?this?, et cetera. Therefore, all these deixis words are used to point to the reference, which means that the meaning of the words to convey the characters? requirements to achieve their goal and make the unspecified events clear is known by looking at the previous words, phrases, sentences, and the whole ideas.
