Abstract :
This thesis entitled The Domination of Pleasure Principle Leads to Death Instinct Resulted Tragedy in the Novel Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser. In analyzing the theme, I use both intrinsic and extrinsic method. The intrinsic includes characterization, plot, and setting. While the extrinsic consist of pleasure principle and death instinct. In the novel, there is a character named Hurstwood who let the pleasure principle dominate him and it lead the death instinct come up, and there's no one to share. Finally, the character died. I conclude that let something dominate the other thing is dangerous. We have to be balance, never to be dominated; even it's a pleasing thing. Besides, the existence of a family is totally necessar
