Abstract :
This research is motivated by corrosion that can occur at any time and cannot be
avoided, especially in steel, but the corrosion rate can be controlled so that the
workpiece can be used longer. This research was conducted to determine the
effect of the quenching process with aluminum solution cooling medium on the
corrosion rate of ST 37 steel. The method used is the experimental method, this
method is used to find the effects of a treatment given by the researcher. There
were 3 specimens each given the quenching treatment with a holding time of 42
minutes in the heating furnace and 1 specimen without treatment. Specimen 1
with a temperature of 650°C, specimen 2 with a temperature of 750°C, specimen
3 with a temperature of 850°C, and specimen 4 without going through the
quenching process, with liquid aluminum cooling medium. Then the specimen
was tested for corrosion rate with battery water solution by immersing it for 72
hours or 3 days, and calculating the corrosion rate using the weight loss method.
From the research conducted, it shows that the treatment of the quenching process
with liquid aluminum cooling media can cause the corrosion rate to increase, the
higher the heating temperature during the quenching process with aluminum
liquid cooling media, the higher the corrosion rate can occur.
