Abstract :
This research aims to discover the code-switching most used by the teacher and the most significant advantages of code-switching for students. The method used in this research is qualitative. The instruments of this research were class observations, interviews, and documentation. Class observations were made to collect data about class situations related to code-switching practices in-class interactions. Interviews were used to find out the opinions of English teachers and students about the purposes and advantages of using code-switching in learning English. The documentation used in this study was video to record activities in class, either the researcher transcribed the video. Furthermore the data regarding code-switching practices are classified into seven types of purposes and seven types of advantages. After that, the data is processed with a simple statistical formula and presented in the analysis description. The subjects of this study were a teacher of English language and 27 students of class VII-A MTs Yaspira Ngambon in the 2022/2023 academic year. The three purposes of code-switching most used by the teacher are the repetitive purpose (46.60%), topic switch (36.19%), and reiteration purpose (9.95%), The three most significant advantages of using code-switching for students are help understand complex concepts in learning English (23.33%), understand new words (20.00%), and help enjoy English class (16.66%). From the research results above, it can be concluded that the teacher and students know the purposes of code-switching most used by the teacher and the most significant advantage of code-switching for students.
