Abstract :
This study was conducted to answer the following question: are the tenth grade of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 able to listen english or not?. (2) What is the ablity level of the tenth grade student of SMAN 5 Kupang in completing and filling the missing words when hearing the short conversation? Based on the problem stated above the objective of this study were as follows: (1) To find out and to know wheter the tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang are able to listen English or not. (2) To find out the the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in completing and filling the missing words when haering the short conversation. The subjects of this study were the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang. The sample of this study was students of Natural science program of tenth grade students. Base on the total number of the students there were 30 students, The method aplied in this study was descriptive method and in collecting data the writer used listening test which consist of (short conversation and the students fill the missing words). Based on the data analysis, there was 2 students (6.6%) who were in excellent level, 9 students (30%) who were in very good level, 14 students ( 46.6%) who were in good level, 5 students (16.6%), who were in fairly good level. There were no students in average level, below average level, poor level, bad level, very bad level.And the ability of the tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 is good. Based on the result of analysis the writer would like to offer some suggestion, The eventhough the result has showed that the students listening ability is a good level. They still need to maintain the listening skillby doing some more listening exercise at home.for the teachers of English still need to vary their listening practice both in terms of materials and techniques. To make the students have a very good or excellent.
