Abstract :
Cinematographic work, also called films, are cultural art works in the form of moving images that has the power to influence in the means of entertainment, information, education, and creative driven works for its audience. Films in Indonesia has already existed since before the nation?s independence, and has never escaped the implementation of film censorship. Based on Article 57 of Law No. 33 of 2009, for any film to be released it must receive the censorship certificate which can only be issued by the Film Censorship Institution (Lembaga Sensor Film / LSF). In addition to issuing censorship certificate, LSF is also authorized to conduct censorship by assessing and evaluating films or film advertisements to determined their eligibility before being distributed to public. LSF being a government institution has been regulated in Government Regulation No. 18 of 2014, to which it regulates the guidelines and criteria for film censorship from various aspects as an effort to minimize the negative influence that some films may have, as well as the age classification of viewers. In this thesis, the author discusses the authority and obligations of LSF with their role in film censorship, films being protected as Copyrighted works under the Law No. 24 of 2014, as well as the procedures for implementing film censorship based on the Government Regulation and Laws. The censorship procedure to be discussed will be analyzed regarding the screenings of critically acclaimed Indonesian film Memories of My Body (Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku) directed by Garin Nugroho, and the rebooted Hollywood action-fantasy film Hellboy by Neil Marshall. Both films was released back in 2019 only to received backlash by the general public in Indonesia in relation to film censorship.
