Abstract :
Communication is a phenomenon that happens every day in human?s life
which has function as tool to express thought, idea and feeling that own by people
inside their mind toward something or other people by using language. Politeness
is an important aspect in communication. The reason is because politeness aspect
is one of aspects that need to be considered in communication. This research aims
to describe politeness principles that used by TK Namira?s teachers in
communication with the students in class.
In analyzing the data, this research uses politeness principles theory by
Leech which consists of six maxims (1) Tact Maxim (maksim kebijaksanaan), (2)
Generous Maxim (maksim kedermawanan), (3) Approbation Maxim (maksim
penghargaan), (4) Modesty Maxim (maksim kesederhanaan), (5) Agreement
Maxim (maksim kemufakatan) and (6) Sympathy Maxim (maksim kesimpatian).
This research uses qualitative method which the aim focus on describing and
understanding politeness phenomenon in language use by TK Namira?s teacher.
Therefore, data collection method that used in this research is indirect observation
with two techniques (1) recording technique, (2) transcription and classifying
technique. After the data collected, the following step of this research is to analyze
the data by using data analysis qualitative method which has three steps in analysing
data of research, they are (1) data reduction, (2) data display and (3) conclusion
drawing or verification.
The result shows that there are two politeness principles that used by the TK
Namira?s teachers in communication process with the students. They are (1)
agreement maxim, (2) approbation maxim. There are forty-three data that that use
agreement maxim and thirty-one data that use approbation maxim. The teachers?
utterances that use politeness principles have some function in communicate with
the students. The utterances that has obedience toward agreement maxim have some
functions (1) to respond to the students? correct answers toward question that given
by the teachers, (2) to respond to the students? opinion or statement about something
or someone. The utterances that has obedience toward approbation maxim have
some functions (1) to give compliment to the students? correct answer when
answering the question given by the teacher, (2) to give compliment to the students
when they done something good in class, (3) to give compliment to the students?
good statements or opinion.
