Abstract :
Infectious disease is one of the most common disease in Indonesia. One of
pathogenic bacteria that often causes infectious diseases is Staphylococcus
aureus. The use of antibiotics is needed to treat infectious diseases caused by
Staphylococcus aureus, however some antibiotics have side effects on the body and
can cause bacterial resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to develop alternative
medicine as new antibiotics. Red galangal rhizome (Alpinia purpurata (Vieill.)
K.Schum.) is a medicinal plant that has phytochemical compounds that play a role
in antibacterial activity. The purpose of this research by means of Systematic
Review is to explore the antibacterial activity as well as the mechanism of action of
phytochemical compounds that act as antibacterial in red galangal rhizome.
Method: Systematic Review by conducting a literature search using Google Scholar
and PubMed that discussed red galangal, Staphylococcus aureus, antibacterial, and
antibacterial phytochemical compounds. Result: 10 studies showed that red
galangal could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus with strong and very
strong inhibition categories. Conclusion: red galangal can inhibit the growth of
Staphylococcus aureus because it has phytochemical compounds that play a role in
antibacterial activity.
