Abstract :
Thyroid nodules are a common clinical finding. Palpable nodules on clinical examinations can be found in about 4-7% of the population in the world. Thyroid carcinoma is found in about 3-16,6% examined nodules. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is one of the diagnostic tests commonly used in diagnosing thyroid carcinoma. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of FNAB in diagnosing thyroid carcinoma in patients with thyroid nodule. Methods: A systematic review was done according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P) 2015. Database used was PubMed and ScienceDirect. Thirty-five studies were included. Results: A pooled sensitivity and specificity was obtained with a value of 0,68 (95% CI, 0,650-0,703) and 0,97 (95% CI, 0,961-0,976) respectively. Conclusion: FNAB is an accurate diagnostic tool capable of giving very little false positives, although it has a poor accuracy in terms of screening power due to high number of false negatives.
