Abstract :
This research was held because the researchers wanted to know the correlation
between generic structure mastery of the text and students? reading comprehension.
Students had been taught generic structure mastery of each text and also the reading
comprehension they have learnt at school. The researcher wanted to see does the
generic structure variable influence the students? reading comprehension or contrary.
The purpose of this research was to find out the correlation between generic
structure mastery of the text and their reading comprehension. There were 2 types of
text given as the instrumentation of this research such as recount text and descriptive
text. The sample of this research was the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Rambah
Samo. There were 26 students involved in this research. The researcher gave 2 tests
they are generict structure mastery of the text test and reading comprehension test.
According to the test given, the researcher found that mean score of the
students? generic structure mastery was 43,41 which belongs to very poor. Besides,
the mean score of the students? reading comprehension was 32,88 which categorized
as very poor. After analyzing the generic structure mastery and students? reading
comprehension using Pearson Correlation Product Moment with a help of SPSS 20
for windows program, it was found that there was no significant correlation between
the generic structure mastery and their reading comprehension at eighth grade
students of SMPN 5 Rambah Samo. The coefficient correlation between the two
variables belonged to low correlation.
