Abstract :
The purpose of this research was to determine whether there is significant
correlat ion between students? personalit y traits and their speaking skill based on
Big Five Personality theory, as follow: Extraversion, Agreeableness,
Conscientiousness, Neuroticism and Openness. The type of this research was
correlational research. The instrument of this research psychological test that was
adapted from Big Five Inventory and test of speaking skill. The students involved
in this research was at the eleventh grade of Senior High School 1 RambahHilir.
This research used cluster random sampling technique. In analyzing the data the
researcher used Pearson product moment of SPSS computer application.
The result of this research was detailed based on its five indicators, as
follows: extraversion = 0.729. agreeableness = 0.669, conscientiousness = 0.566,
neuroticism = 0.110, and openness = 0.640, higher than r
at level 5% (0.388)
and 1% (0.495). It can be concluded that Alternative Hypothesis (H
table
) is accepted
and Null hypothesis (H
) is rejected.
The finding showed that extraversion was in Sufficient Correlation.

Agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness was in Fair Correlation. It means
that extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness has positive
correlation, while neuroticism has negative correlation. However, it could be
concluded that students? personalit y traits correlate wit h students? speaking skill at
the Eleventh Grade of Senior High School 1 RambahHilir. It means that, the
higher traits extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, the higher
speaking skill. So, the higher neuroticism the lower speaking skill.
