Abstract :
Code switching is the use of two languages or more in communication.
Code switching is common in multilingualism and bilingulism communities. Code
switching does not only occur in the community of multilingualism, but also
occurs in the teaching and learning process, especially in the process of teaching
English. the using of code switching in English class is unavoidable because code
switching is very important for teachers and students in the teaching and learning
process. This code transfer is very useful for teachers and students in interacting
and communicating in the teaching and learning process.
This study aims to find the type and function of code switching used by
English teachers in the teaching and learning process in SMA Muhammadiyah
Rambah. This study uses descriptive qualitative. Descriptive design is used in
analyzing data and writing research results. In this study researchers used
observation / documentation and interviews in collecting data. The subject of this
study is a greeting containing code switching by an English teacher in the
teaching and learning process.
After conducting the research, the researchers found three types of code
switching used by teachers in the teaching and learning process. these types was
proposed by poplack and Mattson and Burrenhulttheory. That are tag switching
(10.12%), inter-sentential switching (53, 57%), intra-sentential switching
(36.31%). while the functions of code switching are three functions, namely topic
switch (33.92%), affective function (34, .52%), and repetitive function (30.18%).
Base on the data analysis the researcher councluded that the English Teacher at
SMA Muhammadiyah did all the types and the function of code switching which
propose the theory poplack and Mattson and Burrenhult. Then in communicating
with students, there are three languages used by English teachers in the teaching
and learning process, namely Indonesian, English and Arabic.
