Abstract :
This analysis concerns with one of William Makepeace?s great popular works entitled Vanity Fair. This novel tells about Rebecca Sharp, a poor orphan girl, who wants to change her hard life to be better life or to be an aristocrat, and also wants to take revenge againts the rich?s bad treatment to her after her parents?s death. The objectives of the study are (1) to explain the causes of Becky Sharp?s ambition to be an aristocrat, (2) to show how Becky Sharp achieves her ambition, and (3) to find out the effects of Becky Sharp?s ambition on her life. The data corpus of this research are all of the phrases, clauses, sentences and even paragraphs, and discourses related to the Becky Sharp?s ambition to be an aristocrat in William Makepeace?s Vanity Fair. Then, the writer employs library research including internet browsing to find the relevant theories. Moreover psychological approach is used to analyze the data. The causes of Becky Sharp?s ambition are the suppression of the rich, and her hatred to live in poverty. The ways of Becky Sharp in achieving her ambition are being a governess in the rich family, marrying with rich man, and charming the rich men. Becky Sharp?s ambition brings some negative effects on her life. The effects are losing her husband and son, breaking off her friendship, and expelling from aristocrat and high society. Becky Sharp becomes a cold or cruel woman who has no love, no affection, and no attention for her family, her friends and her surrounding. She only loves or cares about status and wealth. Finally, she lives alone without the people who loves her, although she can reach her ambition.
