Abstract :
The research purposed to discuss the main issue dealing with American dream in Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun. There were two objectives of this study. The first was to analyze the influences of American dreams toward Walter Lee Younger.The second was to identify the effects of American dreams toward the character of Walter Lee Younger. This research used descriptive method as it showed the influences and effects of American dream toward Walter Lee Younger in the form of diaogues and narratives. Further, the technique of data collecting was library research. There were two theories applied. They were American dream and ambition. The psychological and social approaches were also used in the research. The result of the research shows the influences of American dreams toward Walter Lee Younger's ambition. Walter wanted to fulfil his ambition by starting his own business in liquor store. When he got his own business, Walter believed that he would be equal as white people. He also wanted to achieve his dream to have much money so that he could get the opportunity to have a better life. Due to his ambitions, Walter turned into an irreligious, defiant,and greedy person. Additionally, Walter wanted to prove to the family that he could have a better life even though he had to work hard on reaching his dream.
