Abstract :
The objectives of this study entitled The Depiction of the American Dream in Arthur Miller's Death of A Salesman are (1) to describe the American Dream of Willy, Linda, and Biff Loman, (2) to find out the effects of the American Dream in the lives of Willy, Linda, and Biff Loman. To formulate the analysis,the library research is used to support the data includingthe internet browsing.The main data is taken from drama of Death of A Salesman. The theories of the American Dream,setting (including the era of 1940s) are used to analyze the data. Furthermore, the approaches used in this research are sociological and psychological approaches. This research only focuses on the three main characters namely, Willy,Linda, and Biff Loman. They had their own dream and experienced what they wanted.Willy dreamed to be a successful salesman with being well liked, and Linda had dream that she wanted a happiness of her family.While,Biff dreamed to work in great outdoors on ranch. In their efforts to achieve their dreams,they were affected by some effectsin their lives. Willy became a person who had an illusion and became frustrated because of his dream never came true.Linda had to lose her love that was Willy who committed suicide with crash his car. While,the difference of dream between Biff and Willy made both of them had bad relationship.
