Abstract :
This thesis discusses about Death on Imageries and Symbols in Emily Dickinson's "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass", "Because I Could Not Stop for Death", and ?I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died?. It will answer two questions.First, what are the imageries in the three poems "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass?,?Because I Could Not Stop for Death?, and ?I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died? by Emily Dickinson which have relation to the theme of ?death?? Second,what are the symbols in the three poems ?A Narrow Fellow in the Grass?,"Because I Could Not Stop for Death?, and "I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died? by Emily Dickinson which have relation to the theme of?death??
In this research, the writer uses library research. It includes the internet browsing. There are two kinds of data: primary and secondary data. The primary data are taken from the three poems, "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass?,?Because I Could Not Stop for Death?, and ?I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died? by Emily Dickinson. The secondary data are taken from the biography of Emily Dickinson,the theories of theme by Kennedy and Reaske, death by Nasif Nahle,imagery by Frederik and Kennedy and symbol by Holman and Ricouer. This research applies structural approach for it can answer the problems about imagery and symbol.
There are some imageries that can be found in the poem ?A Narrow Fellow in the Grass". They are visual imagery, gustatory imagery, tactile imagery,organic imagery,and kinesthetic imagery. In the poem ?Because I Could Not Stop for Death?, the writer finds visual imagery,and kinesthetic imagery.While in the poem ?I Heard a Fy Buzz When I Died?, the writer finds visual imagery and auditory imagery. The writer also finds so many symbols in the three poems.
