Abstract :
The objectives of this study entitled The Causes and the Effects of the Exile of Henry Bolingbroke in William Shakespeare's King Richard II are (1) to find out the causes of the exile of Henry Bolingbroke in William Shakespeare's King Richard II and (2) to describe the effects of the exile of Henry Bolingbroke in William Shakespeare's King Richard II. To analyze the data, library research and internet browsing are done to support the related theories. The main data are all of the words, phrases, clauses, or paragraphs which contains the causes and the effects of the exile of Henry Bolingbroke in William Shakespeare's King Richard II play. The theory of drama, conflict, cause and effect, character, setting,and exile are used to analyze the data. Moreover, the approaches used in this study are psychological and sociological approaches. In this study, the writer only focuses on the minor character, namely Henry Bolingbroke. He has to be exiled because he has accused Thomas Mowbray of doing some crimes, and has duel with him. Furthermore, Bolingbroke also has many supports from English society that makes King Richard II dislike.His exile,has some effects toward other characters and himself. His father gets sick and dead.Then, King Richard II seizes his wealth which must belong to Bolingbroke. After the action of King Richard II, some noblemen take side into Henry Bolingbroke's side. But, some noblemen are still loyal to King Richard II.Because of being treated unfairly, Bolingbroke comes back with his armies and some noblemen to England to take his rights. He gets not only his rights back,but also the crown. Henry Bolingbroke, finally succeeds King Richard II as King Henry IV.
