Abstract :
This study discusses English derived adverbs. It is concerned with the formation processes and functions of English derived adverbs in sentence constructions. This research is descriptive in nature, which involves the following steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing data. The source of the data is Time magazine of May 24th, 2010. The population of this research is all English derived adverbs used in sentence constructions. The technique applied to take the sample is total sampling. All the data are analyzed one by one. The analysis method applied to describe the formation processes of English derived adverb is top-down technique. While, to determine their functions, tagmemic method is used. The data analysis shows that the English derived adverbs formed through derivation are 96 (93.20%) in number. The English derived adverb formed through compounding consists of 2 (1.94%) data. Further, the Englsh derived adverb formed through conversion is 1 (0.97%) in number. Next, there are 4(3.88%) English derived adverbs formed through suppletion. Meanwhile,the English derived adverbs which fill the functional slot of verb modifier consist of 72 (69.90%) data. Next, the English derived adverbs which function as adjective modifier are 18 (17.4%) in number which consists of 16 (15.53%) real adjective modifiers and 2 (1.94%) participle modifiers.Furthermore, the English derived adverbs which fill the slot of sentence modifier are 12 (11.65%) data. There is only 1 (0.97%) derived adverb which functions as adverb modifier.
